Supplies You Need to Bring

  • Any Photos you want critiqued
  • The camera or phone you use to shoot reference photos
  • A media card for the camera (if applicable)
  • A battery for the camera (if applicable)
  • If you have a laptop, please bring it.
  • If you are bringing a laptop, please bring a card reader that can read your camera card.

Note:  The class can extend to 2pm if needed to make sure plenty of hands-on time is given for everyone.

PASTEL WORKSHOP – Instructor Phil Bates

Saturday – April 18, 2020 – 10A to 3P

Title: How to Paint Water with Pastel

This is a class you won’t want to miss!  Phil Bates, international award winning pastel artist will be sharing his tips, tricks and secrets on how to paint water with pastel. Learn to paint reflections, ripples, whitewater and waterfalls. The class will include an instructional demo in the morning.  In the afternoon, You will paint using reference photos from the instructor, and get personalized advice at your easel. If you have reference photos of water, you may bring those for consideration and advice, but plan on painting from a supplied photo.  The class is geared to those who have some experience painting pastel.


  • Bring your pastels. Bring your pastel supplies ready to paint.
  • a note pad to take notes.
  • Bring a lunch or grab a quick bite locally.

Phil Bates is a national award winning pastel artist.  Phil has a background in graphic design, photography, but spent most of his career in production and cinematography with much of his work used for feature film and TV.  Phil has used his knowledge of photography to recognize landscape compositions that a have an aesthetic appeal.  His paintings have been featured in numerous exhibitions, galleries and national publications.  He is a Distinguished Pastellist with the Pastel Society of the West Coast and is in the Master Circle of the International Association of Pastel Societies.  Phil spends most of his time painting local scenes mostly of creeks and rivers.
